How to Spot Mileage Fraud & Odometer Rollback
Mileage fraud — winding back the odometer to make a car look less used — is one of the most common and most profitable used-car scams. A few thousand kilometres "removed" can add hundreds or thousands to the asking price. Here's how to catch it.
How odometer rollback works
Modern cars store mileage digitally, which sellers assume makes it tamper-proof. In reality, cheap tools can rewrite the value on the dashboard in minutes. The mileage is also stored in other modules — the engine ECU, key fobs and service records — so a sloppy rollback leaves inconsistencies behind.
Warning signs to look for
- Wear that doesn't match the mileage. A worn steering wheel, shiny pedals, sagging seat bolsters or a polished gear knob on a "low-mileage" car are classic tells.
- Gaps or jumps in the service history. Compare the mileage recorded at each service and MOT/inspection. The numbers should only ever go up.
- A suspiciously clean or missing logbook. Fraudsters often "lose" the very documents that would expose them.
- Fresh dashboard screws or trim marks. Signs the instrument cluster has been removed.
- A price that's too good for the mileage. If it looks too cheap for how little it's "done", be sceptical.
The strongest proof is a record of odometer readings over time. Each official reading — at services, inspections and changes of ownership — should be higher than the last. A reading that drops is a smoking gun.
How to verify the real mileage
- Check every date and mileage in the service book and inspection records and plot them in order.
- Cross-reference with any online inspection or MOT history available in your country.
