What Is a VIN? The 17 Characters Explained

5 min read Updated May 2026

A VIN — Vehicle Identification Number — is the unique 17-character code stamped into every car when it's built. Think of it as the vehicle's fingerprint: no two cars share one, and unlike a number plate, it never changes throughout the car's life.

Those 17 characters aren't random. They're a structured code, and once you know how to read them you can tell a lot about a car at a glance.

The three parts of a VIN

  • Characters 1–3 — World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI). Identifies the maker and country of origin. For example, a VIN starting with W was built in Germany; J is Japan; 1, 4 or 5 is the United States.
  • Characters 4–9 — Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS). Describes the model, body style, engine type and restraint system. Character 9 is a "check digit" used to validate that the whole VIN is genuine.
  • Characters 10–17 — Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS). Character 10 is the model year, character 11 is the assembly plant, and the final six are the unique serial number for that specific car.

The model-year character (position 10) follows a 30-year cycle of letters and numbers. I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 are never used for the year to avoid confusion.

Why the VIN matters

Because it's unique and permanent, the VIN is the key that unlocks a vehicle's records. Decode it and you can confirm the exact specification, check for open safety recalls, and — through licensed databases — uncover mileage, theft and accident history. It's also how you confirm the car in front of you is the same car described in the paperwork.

VIN vs. number plate vs. registration

A number plate can be transferred or reissued, and registration documents can be replaced. The VIN is the one identifier that stays with the car from the factory to the scrapyard — which is exactly why every serious history check starts with it.
